The ASC Difference

At American Sandwich Co. our food not only tastes good, it is good! Our menu is 100% free of High Fructose Corn Syrup (which has been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity) and our meats, cheeses and breads do not contain fillers, extenders, flavor enhancers or MSG.

Here is a quick comparison between a selection of our food and the food from a well-known national Sub chain.

ASC FRENCH BAGUETTE

Flour, water, yeast, salt

“THEIR” BREAD

Enriched wheat flour (wheat flour, barley malt, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, yeast, sugar, contains 2% or less of the following: soybean oil, wheat gluten, salt, dough conditioners (DATEM, sodium stearoyl lactylate, ascorbic acid, potassium iodate, azodicarbonamide), yeast nutrients (calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, ammonium sulfate*), wheat protein isolate, yeast extract, vitamin D2, natural flavor, enzymes.

The primary use of ammonium sulfate is as a fertilizer for alkaline soils. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org

ASC CHICKEN

Tyson™ Boneless, skinless chicken breast filets, water, sea salt.

“THEIR” CHICKEN

Chicken breast with rib meat, water, seasoning (corn syrup solids, vinegar powder [maltodextrin, modified corn starch and tapioca starch, dried vinegar], brown sugar, salt, dextrose, garlic powder, onion powder, chicken type flavor [hydrolyzed corn gluten, autolyzed yeast extract, thiamine hydrochloride, disodium inosinate and disodium guanylate]), sodium phosphates.

ASC EGG SALAD

Locally sourced eggs, mayonnaise, salt

“THEIR” EGGS

Egg Omelet Patty (Regular): Whole Eggs, Egg Whites, Water, Nonfat Dry Milk, Premium Egg Blend (isolated pea product, salt, citric acid, dextrose, guar gum, xanthan gum, extractive of spice, propylene glycol and not more than 2% calcium silicate and glycerin to prevent caking), Soybean Oil, Butter Alternative (liquid and hydrogenated soybean oil, salt, soy lecithin, natural and artificial flavors, beta carotene (color), TBHQ and citric acid added to protect flavor, dimethylpolysiloxane (antifoaming agent added), Salt, Beta-Carotene (color)

Is this what they mean by “Fresh”?

The following is an excerpt from a “CBS News MoneyWatch” article reviewing the ingredients from the same nationally known Sub chain:
“Let’s start with the bread, which is baked in the stores, emitting a distinct and lingering odor even outside. The 9-grain wheat, white and sourdough varieties are made with goodies like sodium stearoyl lactylate and ammonium sulfate, which are used as a dough conditioners, and azodicarbonamide, a bleaching chemical most commonly employed in the production of foamed plastics. In the UK, azodicarbonamide has been classified as a substance that can cause asthma when used in an industrial setting. Yummy.

Then there’s the meat. It’s a processed concoction of actual meat and lots of water that’s held together by things like modified food starch and soy protein concentrate, and then goosed with artificial flavorings. If it’s chicken, or “oven roasted chicken strips”, why does it need “chicken type flavor” made from autolyzed yeast extract and hyrolyzed corn gluten? One possible reason is that ingredients like autolyzed yeast extract and hydrolyzed soy protein are stand ins for that enormously effective flavor enhancer MSG (monosodium glutamate) since they also contain the glutamate that gives foods a burst of meaty flavor.”

I tried the Malibu Mushroom Wrap after requesting the mushrooms be sautéed in olive oil instead of butter. It was just as awesome without so many calories. Thx!

The American Sandwich Company is awesome.  If I could, I'd eat lunch there every day!
